A historical hotel and popular public house located in the quaint village of Long Melford in Sudbury, the George & Dragon Inn offers 14 bedrooms in a charming, eccentrically English building that is close to shops, restaurants and more in Sudbury. This inn’s 14 suites feature plush bed linens and bath towels, recently refurbished en-suite bathrooms with tubs or showers, coffee/tea makers, hairdryers, TVs, and free Wi-Fi. Guests also enjoy complimentary full English or continental breakfast. Guests of the inn can enjoy live music and entertainment most weekends, an on-site restaurant, lovely open fireplace, large gardens and courtyard, conference rooms, free Wi-Fi throughout, and parking. The inn also features a nice lounge area, a bar/pub, and is close to shops, historic landmarks, and more. 42 Cover Restaurant features a menu of freshly cooked, local ingredients, and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The bar offers “pub grub” for those wanting a less formal setting for drinks and a meal. Only 10-minutes’ drive away from the inn is the Sudbury Train Station, with the Stansted Airport less than an hour away. Close by to the inn are historic Melford Hall, Little Hall Lavenham, and the Gainsborough Health Club & Spa.
The suites located in the main house were generally described by guests as being small and basic, but also very clean and comfortable. The five rooms located adjacent to the bar in the Ardley House drew the most praise for the spaciousness of the en-suites, and how relatively quiet these rooms were.
Situated in the heart of Long Melford, the inn is in close proximity to several public transportation stops/stations, as well as being quite close to Sudbury. Guests can easily travel to local attractions by car, such as Kersey Ford and Hedingham Castle.
The staff of the George & Dragon—from reception to the restaurant/bar and the inn’s owners—strive to go above and beyond for their guests, as well as patrons of the bar area and restaurant who come for the food and entertainment. Guests raved that the staff were welcoming, polite and friendly.
Although the five rooms in Ardley House drew praise for their spacious sizes and large en-suites, many guests were unhappy with the remaining rooms in the main house, especially ones located near or on top of the bar area. The bathrooms were said to be small, with weak water pressure in showers.
Some guests were unhappy with the long wait time for their meals in the restaurant, and also how noisy the bar area could get on weekends; however, most who stayed at the inn did enjoy the outside bar patio.
Due to the bar’s central location in the hotel, many guests commented that the inn was best for those travelling during the week on business (as Friday and Saturday nights can get noisy), or for those who want to meet up with friends for drinks in the pub.
